Julia Montepagani
Artist Statement
Much of my inspiration comes from observing the natural world and its visual elements: light and color, structure and space, pattern and chaos. I am also interested in the human impulse to explore and create, and in how each person does and sees differently. When I am in my studio, I invent and experiment with a variety of techniques (a mix of painting and printmaking) in order to create dynamic spontaneous images.

My work is also greatly influenced by my studies of physical energetics, in the form of meditative and improvisational movement. Other sources of inspiration include the calculated hand motions required to create seemingly random paintings (i.e. Pollock); the structural forms of fluid architecture (i.e. Gaudí); and the swift, bold signatures of graffiti artists around the city.
