Julia Montepagani at Boston University

Boston University

Walking into Boston University’s College of Fine Arts building, I knew that I finally found my home. I learned to draw with Harold Reddicliffe.

At The Art Students League of New York I discovered new ways of seeing and painting in Dan Gheno’s class, as well as making my color dreams come to life in Ronnie Landfield’s class.

Adelphi University

At Adelphi University, my role in the art world started to shift from that of student to teacher. I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to help others find new ways of seeing, discovering and creating.

bio

Julia Montepagani is a New York State certified visual arts teacher, having received her M.A. in Art Education from Adelphi University (2021). She studied advertising and fine arts at Boston University (BS, 2005), and printmaking at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica (Venice, Italy, 2005). Following college, Julia was offered an opportunity to work and study at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she earned her Master of Business Administration, with a focus on entrepreneurship (2009). Her time at this innovative school only fueled her desire to make more art. In 2007, she completed a seven-week Drawing & Painting Marathon with Graham Nickson at the New York Studio School.  Following her business degree, Julia moved to New York City to further pursue her artistic dreams at the Art Students League of New York, where she studied with Michael Grimaldi, Frank O’Cain, Ronnie Landfield and Dan Gheno (2009–2014).

In 2011, Julia was awarded the Sara and Yasuo Kuniyoshi Foundation Residence Scholarship for the Vytlacil Artist-in-Residence program, where she created landscape and interior paintings and received counsel from Hans Witschi, Gary Sussman and Grace Knowlton. In 2013, she was selected to participate in the Affordable Art Fair in New York. In 2014, she was awarded the Julio Valdez Studio Residency Fellowship for printmaking, as well as the Fantasy Fountain Fund Travel Scholarship to study at the Marchutz School in Aix-en-Provence, France.

Julia comes from a family of artists and art lovers—her father (an Italian native) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy and was one of the original portrait painters in the Uffizi Plaza in the 1960s and 70s. He instilled in her a love for art.
